CIMdata Online Polls
CIMdata is now featuring online polls with real time reporting on our web site at http://www.cimdata.com/polls/polls.html. Each week the results of the previous poll will be included in the CIMdata PLM Industry Summary to help you stay on top of trends in the PLM industry.
Take a moment to visit the site and vote on our current poll.
The results for the last opinion poll are:
In CIMdata’s latest opinion poll, participants were asked to indicate to what extent their company was using social computing and other Web 2.0 technologies in its product development processes. Two-thirds (66%) of the poll participants indicated very limited to no current use of these technologies. An extremely low percent (9%) indicated that they use these solutions a great deal and 25% indicated some use. In general, these are disappointing numbers for those have predicted an explosion of the use of these technologies within a corporate environment. As we know, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites have grown rapidly. The use of them is widespread throughout much of today’s social media-savvy younger generation, but they are not yet readily accessible within today’s corporate product development environments.
CIMdata believes that there are two primarily factors that are limiting the overall deployment and use of social computing technologies in today’s corporate product development environments. The first factor is that the social computing technologies that are offered by today’s PLM solution suppliers are relatively new and offer limited functionality. The second factor is that many companies are still looking at social computing as something that cannot be controlled or managed in a way that increases productivity of their product development process participants while protecting a company’s intellectual property. They are concerned that individuals will use social computing for non-business activities—reducing the time they focus on their assigned tasks—rather than as an enabler for collaboration among the various individuals and groups working within the context of product development. Additionally, they have concerns that the commercial social computing solutions have not been designed with privacy and data security as fundamental capabilities. Use of these tools without such capabilities exposes product designs and competitive information to risk.
Studies have shown that humans are hard-wired to cooperate and share opinions. This means social media can and should be used to support product development. In fact, internal and external communities that can collaborate in a flexible yet controlled manner can better drive an organization’s ability to define and deliver innovative products to the market. There is no doubt that getting the most out of this new way of working and the social computing technologies offered is yet to be fully understood within the typical product development environment. CIMdata’s experience is that, if properly implemented, using social computing/networking techniques provides benefits, but those benefits may prove to be elusive to many. CIMdata believes that the PLM industry has an opportunity to lead the way in using social computing within the business environment—internally by utilizing and externally by delivering best practices and enabling technologies. The ultimate objective should be to leverage social computing technologies to provide enhanced collaborative environments for PLM users that further expand the use of PLM within and across extended enterprises.
NOTE: The results of these polls are anecdotal, not scientific.
