CIMdata Online Polls

CIMdata is now featuring online polls with real time reporting on our web site at http://www.cimdata.com/polls/polls.html. Each week the results of the previous poll will be included in the CIMdata PLM Industry Summary to help you stay on top of trends in the PLM industry.

Take a moment to visit the site and vote on our current poll.

The results for the last opinion poll are:

The intent of CIMdata’s most recent poll was to encourage more conversation about the reality of how too many PLM projects are currently being executed and experienced across our multiple industries.

When asked what percentage of PLM initiatives encounter substantial unexpected obstacles, surprises, detours, and interruptions in the project along the way, an overwhelming 75% responded that the majority of PLM projects do. And some 30% responded that they thought nearly all PLM projects experience these challenges! If these sample poll results are accurate for industry in general, it means that the PLM community (i.e., the PLM software vendor, systems integrators, consultants, and others) hasn’t provided the guidance, skills, training, software, etc., or some combination of said elements, needed to be foolproof.

When asked to identify the primary cause of these challenges, the reasons attributed were in order: technical, business, organizational, solution, and last financial. The good news is that very few projects are believed to go off the rails due to the wrong solution selected or from an unresponsive supplier. The bad news is that too many PLM projects are encountering technical obstacles in which CIMdata believes the majority of could have been predicted and mitigated with more realistic planning and assimilation of best practices.

These results confirm what CIMdata’s has seen from audits we have performed or projects we have been asked to complete or restart. Rarely do we encounter a technical obstacle that we have not seen before and know can be successfully overcome. As example, we often advise our clients in CIMdata’s PLM Leadership Certificate training programs that the technical issues of application integration, interoperability, migration, and data quality can cause the best intended PLM projects with even modest scopes to fall behind schedule and above budget. We also often discuss the cultural adoption issues that tend to get in the way of an organization’s ability to take 100% advantage of the new process and business capabilities provided by the chosen solution. In the end, PLM is like most complex multi-variables equations—they take a focused effort and can be more easily solved by organizations that can bring to the table experience and a well defined set of best practices.

NOTE: The results of these polls are anecdotal, not scientific.
