CIMdata Online Polls

CIMdata is now featuring online polls with real time reporting on our web site at http://www.cimdata.com/polls/polls.html. Each week the results of the previous poll will be included in the CIMdata PLM Industry Summary to help you stay on top of trends in the PLM industry.

Take a moment to visit the site and vote on our current poll.

The most recent poll focuses on the use of PLM enabling solutions to support service in the field. The results for the last opinion poll are:

It is clear from this poll that the respondents do service their products in the field. Many of them (over 73%) manage some or all of their product service information in their PLM-enabling solutions. This is a good finding, as it implies that these companies are leveraging the intellectual assets developed during product development for downstream applications like field service. One big issue facing field service is the configuration of what is being serviced. What is in place in the field is often very different from the product originally delivered to the customer. These changes can accumulate from actions by both the customer and the company that originally provided the product. What is important is that these changes are tracked so that the service team can have the right information, right tools and right parts to take the necessary service actions. Nearly 38% of the companies responding manage all as-maintained product information, and over 62% manage some as-maintained configurations, which illustrates that there is still significant room for improvement.

While companies maintain service information in PLM, it is not the system used to define service plan in all companies, with just under 23% saying they define them in PLM. The poll did not ask, but many ERP systems have such capabilities, or they could be relying on the world’s most common PLM-enabling solution, Microsoft Excel.
